How to Change Your Name in Dota 2?

With millions of active players in Dota 2, your nickname might be the only thing that sets you apart from the crowd. However, even if you have the coolest nickname in the world, you might just not feel like it anymore or want to feel refreshed. Sometimes, you just have to change it to align with esports protocols or even just go incognito. No matter your case, this guide will walk you through how to change a name in Dota 2 quickly and easily.
Is It Possible to Change Your Name in Dota Separately From Steam?
First things first: your Dota 2 nickname is directly tied to your Steam account nickname. While the game client once allowed players to change their names from their in-game profiles, this feature has been removed. Although it’s not completely clear why Valve has decided to remove it, one thing is clear for sure — now there’s only 1 method to rename your Dota 2 account — via the Steam app.
How to Change Your Dota 2 Name?
Let’s go through a step-by-step instruction on how to change an account name in Dota 2. We will also attach screenshots to help you handle the process.
Logging into Steam
First, you have to install Steam and download Dota 2 from the official website. If you don’t have an account yet, don’t worry — registration and download are completely free.

Accessing Your Profile
The next step is to open Steam. Just find the shortcut on your desktop or in the Start menu, open the web version with your browser, or click on the Steam icon in the tray if the app is already running. In Steam, hover your mouse over your current name and select Profile in the dropdown menu.

Once you’re on your profile page, locate the “Edit Profile” button in the top-right corner of the page and click it.

Adding a New Nickname and Saving Changes
To change your current nickname, add your new nickname to the “Profile Name” field. Then, scroll down to the bottom of the page and hit “Save” to finalize the changes.

That’s it — your Steam and Dota 2 nickname are now updated!

Want to know what nicknames someone used in the past? Steam keeps a record of previous aliases and any player can check previous nicknames on any account. To do it, just visit the Steam profile of the account you’re curious about. Click the small arrow next to the current name. A dropdown menu will display all nickname history. If you’re viewing your own profile, you’ll also have the option to “Clear previous aliases” to wipe the slate clean.
